STAR Reading Program星空阅读计划(上师大二外)

  为全面提高学生的英语水平,我校中学部采取了令人振奋的创新方式。它被称为"星空阅读计划",它的指导原则是基于孩子们不同的阅读水平,开展日常的分层阅读活动。首先最重要的是,由我们学校的图书管理员(Wayne),帮助学生一起寻找适合他们水平的书籍。我们相信,书可以作为一个窗口,一个全新的世界,如果鼓励学生找到他们真正喜欢的书,有很大的机会,他们将成为终身读者。我们的图书管理员用热情和知识来引导这些年轻人的思想走向正确的方向。然后,学生们在每组3位老师的指导下,在每月4周的阅读课中使用这些来自英语图书馆的书籍。

  The Middle School Department of SFLS has implemented an exciting and innovative method to raise the overall English level of the students. It’s called STAR Reading and it works by getting kids to view reading as a daily activity. The first important step involves our school librarian (Wayne) who works with the students to find books suitable for their level. We believe that a book can serve as a window to a whole new world and, if the students are encouraged to find books they truly enjoy, there is a great chance they will become lifelong readers. Our librarian has the enthusiasm and knowledge to guide these young minds in the right direction. The Students then use these books from the English library during 4 weekly reading sessions supervised by up to 3 teachers per group.

  Each of our wonderful teachers has developed a strategy for helping kids of varying English levels. For example, Abdul Kamal, our science and math teacher uses group presentations to motivate the students to verbalize what they read. This method aids their oral English level and keeps the students focused on their daily tasks. Another science teacher, Trixi, uses pair reading to encourage lower level English students to build the vocabulary and reading skills needed to meet their grade level. Jacques, one of our new English teachers, uses a database of level appropriate reading materials to form small groups of enthusiastic teams to encourage each other in the reading process. Another English Teacher, Natasha, use a daily journal to get students to build their vocabulary by writing down new words and storylines. Likewise, Courtney, a new teacher in the English department, uses group reading to create a small team of excited readers.

  这种以阅读为中心的教学模式,每位中学老师都参与其中,它囊括了语言习得的核心方法:完全沉浸式学习。我们学习语言是通过实际操作,而不仅仅是通过理论或语法。就像一个新的游泳者需要在游泳池里游泳一样(当然是在老师的监督下),语言学习者也需要把新语言融入到他或她的日常习惯中。如果一个游泳教练只使用粉笔和幻灯片指导他的学生,那他就太差劲了。每天将阅读和口语融入到学生的生活中,将创造一种语言习得的氛围。

  This focus on reading, involving each teacher of the Middle School Department, encapsulates a core method of language acquisition: Total Immersion. We learn language by doing it and not through theory or grammar alone. Much like a new swimmer needs to get wet in the pool (with the supervision of a teacher, of course) so too the language learner needs to incorporate the new language into his or her daily habit. It would be a poor swimming instructor indeed who only uses chalk and PowerPoint to guide his pupils. The daily incorporation of reading and speaking into the lives of our pupils will create an atmosphere of language acquisition.

  当然,文学的价值远不止于语言习得。它通过激发年轻读者的想象力,并用事实滋养这种想象力来浇灌学习之树的根。它以无数无言的方式服务于学习者的整个教育世界。因此,我校中学部非常荣幸地宣布开展“星空阅读计划”,并希望得到全校师生的支持,帮助我们将每一个孩子培养成终身读者。

  The value of literature, of course, goes far beyond language acquisition. It waters the very root of the learning tree by stimulating the imagination of young readers and by also feeding this imagination with facts. It serves the whole educational world of the learner in countless, unspoken ways. This is why the Middle School Department of SFLS is proud to announce this STAR Reading program and hopes to gain the support of the whole SFLS community to assist us in making lifelong readers out of each and every child.
